The Australian Sports Injury Prevention Taskforce has presented its report, ‘SportSafe Australia: A National Sports Safety Framework’. The report provides broad guidelines for Australians to participate in sport in the safest possible environment.

The sport safety framework has been developed for sport participants, coaches, officials, facility planners and managers. The report highlights the respective responsibilities of government agencies, sporting organisations and facility providers to add value to the sporting experience by reducing injuries and delivering a ‘duty of care’ to all involved.

A SportSafe initiative within Active Australia at the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is taking responsibility to prioritise and implement the recommendations of the framework report.

As a result, a resource titled ‘Become a Sport Safe Club’ has been published and is available from ASC Publications or from State branches of Sports Medicine Australia. Similar resources for sport and recreational facilities and schools are being considered.
