‘Towards Best Practice’

– an electronic smorgasbord of innovation, benchmarking and best practice in local government

Councils need access to current information about process benchmarking activities as they are being undertaken, and best practice outcomes as they are being implemented, throughout the local government industry.

The NSW Local Government and Shires Associations (NSWLGSA), with seed funding under the Local Government Development Programme, have undertaken the development of an electronic information exchange to record and link information relating to benchmarking and best practice relevant to Local Government in NSW.

This electronic information exchange, known as ‘Towards Best Practice’, is an interactive Internet Web site from which councils can retrieve information about benchmarking and best practice in local government. Councils can also submit information about benchmarking and best practice as they undertake continuous improvement in their own councils.

Recent discussions with all State Associations have revealed widespread interest in a national ‘Towards Best Practice’ Web site, accessible to all Australian councils. The National Office of Local Government, Australian Local Government Association and LGSANSW are currently negotiating to make the ‘Towards Best Practice’ Web site a national resource.

The ‘Towards Best Practice’ information exchange is located on the Web site of the LGSANSW and councils are encouraged to use the site to assist in the development of more efficient ways to provide quality services to their communities.

You can visit the Towards Best Practice Web site at www.lgsa.org.au/tbp/
