Exploring Perth with multi media kiosks

The City of Perth has established a number of multi media kiosks providing improved customer communication 24 hours a day.

Known as ‘Perth Explorer’, initially a kiosk was established in the City’s Library. This gave residents free Internet access.

There are now three more Perth Explorer kiosks. These provide residents and visitors with easy, all day access to Council information, events and guides to the City.

The kiosks feature a touch screen interface with full motion video, audio and animated graphics. A print out facility enables users to readily print out maps or forms.

In the future an electronic payments, restaurant listings, shopping information and other language options will be included.

To measure the value of the kiosks a user feedback section is also included. This, together with the high level of usage, has indicated people are very happy with the facility. The kiosks are also wheelchair accessible.

One kiosk located on the City station concourse was accessed every hour of the day in its first week of operation. This information would not have otherwise been available without a visit to Council Offices in Council hours.

One kiosk, in operation for over 12 months, has shown no decline in usage. This indicates that high initial access is not merely generated by the novelty factor.

Director of Corporate Services, Noelene Jennings, said the kiosks have been designed with Internet integration. This ensures that they will continue to be able to provide up to date information in an accessible way.

“The result is improved customer communication without increasing demands on staff,” she said.
