Promoting business and growth

The appointment of a Manager of Economic Development has seen a number of key projects come to fruition in Baulkham Hills.

The aim of this appointment is to foster continued prosperity and economic development in the region, providing local job and business opportunities.

In 1997, Council adopted a strategic plan to encourage business in the area.

This comprised the following five pronged approach.

  • Liaison with local business and community organisations
  • Research and analysis of potential economic opportunity
  • Developing industry
  • Streamlining procedures to assist industry
  • Maximising future growth opportunities in an environmentally sustainable way.

Council has raised its profile among local and regional business groups and has encouraged dialogue between developers and residents to assist in business relocations.

Council’s representation on the Sydney Regional Development Organisation, the Regional Area Consultative Committee, Young Achievers Australia and the Western Sydney Investment Centre among other bodies, has increased opportunities for attracting business investment and acumen to Baulkham Hills.

Studies have been undertaken to identify non residential land which might be suitable for industrial development.

From the Retail and Commercial Centres Study and Employment Lands Study, Council now has a clear picture of the industrial and employment capacity of the Shire, providing new opportunities for development.

Another prong of the Strategy aims to attract international business. To this end, a brochure has been produced detailing the advantages of investing in the Shire.

The strengthening of partnerships with the University of Western Sydney and developing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of State and Regional Development in dealing with international business will also further this cause.

Finally, the potential tourism benefits to be gained from the impending Olympic Games have not been lost. Recently, grants to upgrade facilities at Northmead Oval and the Hills Basketball Stadium to international standard have been obtained.
