New manual for engineers

Road construction and design is set to be made easier and less costly with the release of a new guidelines manual, ‘Pavement Materials in Road Building – making better use of local materials’.

Specifically designed for Local Government engineering staff, the manual was produced by the Institution of Engineers in conjunction with the Australian Road Transport Research Board. It contains information on pavement design procedures, construction processes and techniques for the stabilisation of different soil materials.

In addition, there is information on 50 different soil types, how they perform in differing Australian conditions and low cost techniques for testing them.

Preparation of the manual was overseen by a national committee. Its members included Geoff Barrow, Director of Services Development and Planning at from Hobsons Bay City Council and Michael Ellis from Local Government consultants, Fisher Stewart.

The manual is expected to become a standard reference for Council engineers providing consistent information at a time of widespread change in Local Government, including increased staff mobility.
