As might be expected, the most dynamic industry in the Flinders Ranges region is tourism. Several recent initiatives of Flinders Ranges Council aim to have the area’s wonderful attractions generate greater prosperity, particularly for the townships of Quorn and Hawker.
Chief among these is a new partnership between Council, the Quorn Progress Association(QPA) and the Pitchi Ritchi Railway.
Community Development Officer Marcus Brady said the Railway is a central tourist feature with a colourful history dating back to its time as part of the old Ghan line to Alice Springs.
The railway was restored by volunteers largely from outside the region. This has led to the community not fully appreciating its value to the local economy. A partnership between the three organisations will help increase a local sense of ownership of the Railway and the unique heritage that comes with it.
“To increase the amount of tickets sold on the train, is to also increase the amount of beds slept in, the amount of pies eaten, the amount of drinks ordered at the bar,” Marcus said. “It might also mean more people cheering on our local football team on Saturdays! That’s the multiplier effect.”
Under the new partnership the Visitor Information Centre has been relocated to the Quorn Railway Station. As well as being able to purchase rail tickets and souvenirs, visitors can book accommodation, a table at a restaurant, and obtain travel information.
“This will increase income for the QPA, the Railway and provide visitors with an experience of the railway heritage all year round,” Marcus Brady said. “Increasing the amount of activities and attractions open regularly to the public is acknowledged by the Flinders Ranges Council as necessary.”
“In opening the Town for business all year round, overnight stays are encouraged. When a visitor stays overnight the most positive, measurable impact is made on the local economy.”
Other initiatives to promote the region include the production of a tourism web site, exhibits in Adelaide and Melbourne consumer shows and the use of local media to gain community involvement and attendance at local events.
As Community Development Officer, Marcus Brady provides professional representation, advice and administration to the communities of Quorn and Hawker. This has enabled not for profit organisations in the area to set higher goals for the future.
