Jobs online

Melbourne’s Darebin City Council has begun advertising employment opportunities on its website. Like in many Council areas, Darebin is one of the largest employers. As such it advertises around 100 positions per year.

For each advertised position, an average of more than 30 respondents contact Council seeking further details. Darebin’s Senior Organisational Development Consultant Employee Relations, Neil Hunt, said the Internet was identified as an effective, cost cutting tool for providing information on Council employment opportunities.

“By making position descriptions and application forms available on the Internet we can dramatically reduce costs,” he said. “This includes costs in both time and money, of taking requests for position descriptions, photocopying, postage, filing and gathering responses.”

The online process also means that job applicants can have instant access to job information and can assess whether or not a particular job suits their particular skills and interests. From the website they can also gain further information about the Council and its work.

Council staff have been trained in updating the website to include new jobs. All printed job advertising will carry the web address.

The site also allows job seekers to register for ‘keymail’ so they can be notified by email if a job in their area of interest becomes available. “The site offers a simple but sophisticated ‘open all hours’ approach to prospective applicants,” Neil Hunt said.
