Smarter, greener, cleaner

Queanbeyan residents are enjoying a new waste management system introduced in March. Under the new system, residents now have a three bin service.

It comprises their current green lid and yellow bin lids for green waste and recycling respectively, and a new red lid bin for garbage. Mayor Frank Pangello said home owners have responded well to the introduction of the smaller size 140 litre red bin for garbage.

“Home owners were given the option to request a larger size bin at extra cost,” he said. “But a massive 93 percent are keen to do the right thing for the environment by using the smaller garbage bin. Furthermore those requesting the larger bins have done so for good reasons, and have actually indicated their support for the new system.”

Introduction of the new waste management system, designed to reduce waste going to landfill, was supported by a local school which designed posters of the Smarter Cleaner Greener message used in educational materials.

“When it comes to waste management, our children are the ones that will feel the consequences of our actions the most,” Mayor Pangello said. The alterations to our waste management system will not only contribute to the health and well being of the environment but to future generations of Queanbeyan residents.”
