Once again Queensland Councils are each being encouraged to raise their community’s awareness of the value of Local Government during Local Government Awareness Week to be held 19 – 25 June.
Since the start of the year, the Local Government Association of Queensland has been issuing Councils throughout the state with a comprehensive set of materials to assist with their promotion. These include regular newsletters, an Information Pack full of ideas and promotional materials, and a calendar of events.
This year the process has been assisted by the launch in March of the Local Government Week website at www.awarenessweek.lgaq.asn.au
Other statewide activities include an essay competition for secondary students, and a colouring competition for primary students. Entries will be judged by Councils, with winning local entries sent to the LGAQ for State judging. LGAQ believes Local Government Week can bring great benefits to Councils that make the effort to involve their communities.
“It can increase community understanding of Council’s role as well as providing Council with greater insight into the community,” said LGAQ Marketing Officer, Bernadette Egan. “This, together with greater public acknowledgement can increase morale at Council.”
The Week is coordinated by the Local Government Association of Queensland and is sponsored by the Department of Communication and Information, Local Government, Planning and Sport; Department of Public Works; the Beverage Industry Environment Council; Ontime Copy Centres and The Printing Office.
