Engineering initiatives rewarded

Local Government engineers were acknowledged for their innovative approach at an award ceremony during the IPWEA (NSW Div) Conference.

Once again Councils submitted a large number of entries under various categories.

Winner of the Design and Construction of a Local Government Project Category in this Olympic year was Lake Macquarie City Council for its Hunter Region Athletics & Gymnastics Centre.

This Centre was designed to cater for the special needs of the region as well as meeting the requirements for events of international standard.

It includes a nine lane synthetic surface athletics track, gymnastics hall, steeple chase, long jump, pole vault and shot put facilities.

Parramatta City Council took out the award for New or Improved Techniques with its Aboriginal Landscaping & Landform Artworks on Grand Camellia Avenue.

The Environmental Initiatives category was won by Inverell Shire Council for its Central Business District Redevelopment Project.

Waste Minimisation and Management in Construction and Demolition was won by Randwick City Council for its reconstruction of Lenthall Street Kensington where the focus was on using recycled materials.

Dubbo City Council took out the Best Practice in Water Supply and Wastewater Award for its effective use of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisitor System (SCADA) services.

The Occupational Health and Safety Award went to Bellingen Shire Council for its Bridge Gantry which provides ease of operation reducing strain in lifting and other risks.
