Council offices become an art gallery

When Meander Valley Council consolidated its customer service at Westbury it decided to upgrade the public areas and, at the same time, provide a display space for artwork created by its talented community.

The result is that now Council can provide its customers with an open and modern environment for doing business, improved access to the building and a modern gallery space.

In addition, the Council Chambers have a larger public gallery, and new toilets. Improved access for people with a disability has also been provided.

The gallery area will display Meander Valley art and significant art displays from other parts of Tasmania and Australia.

Meander Valley Council believes that, while other Councils often display local artworks, having a dedicated community art gallery within Council offices is unique.

“The Meander Valley is notable for the quality and quantity of its artists and this community gallery provides a perfect opportunity to expand available display space,” said Council’s General Manager, Paul Ranson

“Moreover, it is display space in a community setting where the public can enjoy and observe the art works while they go about other business.”

Currently on display in the community art gallery is an exhibition of paintings by distinguished local artist, Rafael Saldana.

This exhibition was officially opened by renowned Deloraine artist Tony Smibert. It proved an instant success with two paintings being sold within hours of its official opening .

Exhibitions will be rotated on a regular basis.
