Development program for elected members

Offering Elected Members a development program specifically designed to meet their needs has been a great success story for the Western Australian Municipal Association’s (WAMA) Training and Development.

Three years ago WAMA developed 13 training modules for Councillors. These modules are kept current with changes to the Local Government Act and other changes within the sector. Since then, over 1,000 elected members have attended a range of training programs. The modules have been very well received by participants and are now part of the Local Government culture in the west.

The modules have been designed to cover the broad gamut of issues faced by Councillors as they fulfil their duties. These include Legal Responsibilities of Elected Members; Land Use Planning; Performance Reviews; Teamwork. Communication and Conflicts in Local Government Meetings; Strategic Planning; Local Government Finance; Community Consultation and Participation; Ethics and Conduct for Elected Members; Regions and Resource Sharing; Policy Development; Change Management; and Customer Service and Complaints Handling.
