On 24 November, the Premier of Western Australia, Richard Court, officially opened the new Shire of Broome Administration building. He congratulated the Shire on a design and structure that reflects the character and history of Broome, yet is modern and fully accessible to people with disabilities.
A strong representation of local people, including several former Shire Presidents, attended the official ceremony.
Students from the Broome Primary School and Broome Senior High School also attended. A performance by the Broome Senior High School Band followed the official opening.
Councillors and Shire staff conducted guided tours of the new administration offices.
The new Administration building replaces Council’s old offices and Chambers, which were constructed in the 1960s and extended in the 1970s.
The new building is the result of an extensive process, which identified the needs of Council and its administration into the next decade, the importance of the site and its relationship to ‘old’ Broome.
This relationship is acknowledged in the new
building’s external representation of traditional Broome architecture while incorporating contemporary modern office design and functionality.
The project included major alteration and extensions to the Broome Public Library.
The building’s central core is designed to withstand a major cyclonic event, providing a
repository for
important Council records should an extreme
event occur in the future.
