Funding boost for online services in WA

The delivery of online Local Government services in regional Western Australia will soon become a reality following a $6 million grant from the Federal Government’s Networking the Nation Fund.

“Regional Councils across the state would be excited at the news that there is now funding to assist and plan the delivery of online Local Government services,” said Councillor Ian Mickel, President of the Western Australian Municipal Association.

“These projects will see Local Government enter the information technology era in a big way. The two funded projects – ‘Linking Councils and Communities’ and ‘Community Access to the Information Age’ – will result in a coordinated and integrated approach to the delivery of online services in rural WA.”

The ‘Linking Councils and Communities’ project aims to develop community focused online services for delivery by individual Local Governments, including infrastructure and Internet access, website and online service development, education and training and organisational development.

Initial funding of $1.2 million was granted for project planning and the initial phase of implementation, with a further $4.4 million set aside for further phases of project implementation.

The ‘Community Access to the Information Age’ project focuses on community access to online technology via the Internet through selected rural public libraries and Council offices. It received funding of $230,000.
