Boost for Active Australia Councils

Active Australia Local Government Network Councils will be invited to take part in an evaluation of the network to help improve support to Councils in providing sport and physical activity services.

The research project will seek feedback, via a questionnaire, about Councils’ sport and physical activity provision, their understanding of Active Australia and how the Local Government Network can be improved.

Councils play an integral role in providing support services to local clubs and are increasingly providing local coordination between schools, clubs, health services and local sport and recreation centres. Evaluation results will help refine the types of support Councils need.

By becoming a member of the Active Australia Local Government Network, a Council becomes a partner with Active Australia and its relevant State Department of Sport and Recreation — working together to improve sport and physical activity opportunities.

As a member of Active Australia, Network Councils have access to a range of support services. These include resources at discounted prices, access to examples of leading practice, eligibility to apply for member only grants (in some states) and opportunities to attend conferences exclusive to members.

More than 62 percent of Councils across Australia are involved in the Local Government Network. Western Australia’s Shire of Yilgarn is the most recent member, bringing the total number to 241.

Jak Carroll, author of the 1995 landmark report Local Government Sport and Recreation Provision in Australia, will lead the research team from the Southern Cross University in Lismore, NSW.

The project will begin in April with results expected in late June.
