Meeting accommodation needs

The Blue Haven Retirement Village commenced operations in 1979. It is fully owned and operated by Kiama Council, located on the south coast of New South Wales.

The complex offers three levels of accommodation, 40 nursing home beds, 30 hostel units and 115 self care units.

The Village is currently valued at $25.9 million and provides accommodation for approximately 225 people. It has 15 full time and 60 part time employees.

In August 1999, the Minister for Local Government opened Stage 4 Project. This is a multi storey block of 21 high quality 2 and 3 bedroom units. Stage 4 of the project cost approximately $5.4 million.

“It has been the most successful project completed by Council in the Blue Haven Complex to date,” said Mayor Sandra McCarthy. “Demand for the units was very strong and Council was forced to hold a ballot to determine who the successful occupants would be. This resulted in all of the 21 units being taken up in a single day.”

The project was financed initially by loans authorised by the Department of Local Government and subsequently by the tenants who occupy the units on a loan/licence arrangement.

This means that the tenants’ loan Council the purchase price and in return they receive a life time licence to occupy the unit.

Kiama Council operates a number of schemes, which provide access to Blue Haven Units for residents catering for a range of personal financial situations.Units are available from $105,000 to more than $350,000 providing a range of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom designs.

Options are available for access to units at a substantially lower entry fee under certain conditions.

As well as high quality units, Council provides on site management, a vital call emergency call system, maintenance for the grounds, a village centre for the residents’ use and a strong cooperative arrangement with the residents’ committee.

The provision of meals for interested residents, and a wide range of recreational and assistance programs, are available to residents through various volunteer and support groups.
