Pine Rivers best PS annual report in Queensland

A Queensland Council has become the first in the State to win the public sector annual report award. The Pine Rivers Shire Council’s 1999-2000 annual report took out the award at a ceremony at Parliament House in April.

For the past 20 years, the Building Services Authority, Queensland Sugar Corporation, Port of Brisbane Authority and the Totalisator Administration Board have dominated the overall winner award.

Council’s win was a breakthrough for Local Government. Not only was it the first local authority to win the State Award in the Institute of Internal Auditor’s 20 year award history, it is also the first Council ever to gain an ‘Award of Excellence’. Council also picked up the Price Waterhouse Coopers special trophy for the best Local Government annual award in Queensland and the Most Readable Category in the special awards.

Accepting the award, Pine Rivers’ CEO, John Mathews, said he was overwhelmed with the win.

“We’ve taken on the best in Queensland and beaten them,” he said. “There was some pretty heavy competition out there with much bigger budgets than ours but we’ve shown that the Pine Rivers Shire Council can compete with the best.”

John Mathews said it was all the sweeter for the Council as the annual report was produced inhouse as opposed to most contestants who hired consultants.

The awards attracted 58 entries from the Queensland Public Sector and were judged by an independent panel of 10 who were unanimous in their choice.
