Rural retirement at its best

Kojonup is a prime location for people wanting to retire to the country, but still wish to be secure in the knowledge that their current and future needs will be well looked after.

Located in Kojonup’s attractive historic precinct, Springhaven Retirement Community has freestanding units with sweeping views across nearby farmlands. Several home units cater for older people wishing to remain independent but are assured that health and personal services are readily available at the adjacent Springhaven Lodge and nearby hospital.

Kojonup is also well serviced by medical practitioners.

Residents can also make use of a range of services and participate in various activities at Springhaven Lodge. These include meals delivered to their unit or eaten at the Lodge, shopping delivery and laundry and cleaning services. Residents can also participate in church services and social functions.

Council’s Springhaven Lodge is designed in the style of the nearby Barracks Military Museum, the oldest building in the town. It can cater for up to 22 residents, and provides both single accommodation and double rooms for couples. Centrally located, Springhaven is within walking distance of supermarkets, shops, chemist, library and various other services.

Specialising in assisting people with dementia, Springhaven Lodge was one of the first such hostels in Western Australia to gain accreditation under the Federal Government’s new standards for quality aged care. A full day program for dementia is run each week at the Lodge. One room is permanently set up for respite care and, if rooms are available, additional respite can be offered.

Springhaven has six carers and six hotel or support staff, with its gardens and grounds being maintained by Council. For active older residents, an activities coordinator runs a full program catering for all interests.

Kojonup has some 90 interest groups and organisations offering activities from golf, bowling and tennis to arts and craft and gardening groups.

Springhaven Lodge Manager, Carmel Hill, said Kojonup is one of only a few Council’s in WA offering aged care accommodation.

“Ongoing support and involvement of Council has enabled us to keep up with higher standards of accreditation,” she said.
