Mayor Peter Black was first elected to Dalrymple Shire Council in 1961. In 1973, he became Mayor and still holds this position. At the Local Government Association of Queensland’s Annual Conference in Townsville earlier this month, Mayor Black was recognised for this milestone of 40 years service. It is believed he is the longest serving Australian Councillor currently in office.
A grazier and businessman, in addition to his long service to Local Government, Peter Black has held various positions on a range of Boards, Trusts and community organisations. In 1990, he was recognised for his services with an OAM.
During his 28 years as Mayor, his key priority has been the upgrading of infrastructure. He has been a driving force behind the construction of facilities including the HM Clarke Saleyards, the $2.4 million Dalrymple Villa, the World Theatre and Council’s new workshop building.
In receiving his certificate of long service, Peter Black told delegates that he has long realised that the cavalry will not be coming over the hill so you must get in and do what you can. He said that strong community support and a Council made up of a fantastic group of people have greatly assisted him over the years.
In 1952, then aged only 18 years, Peter Black wrote the following prophetic words about leadership. A leader must be human and must be fair. He must never pretend to be infallible; he profits by mistakes. More than where he is going to, he knows how he is going to get there. By premeditation and not procrastination he forges ahead. He is an enthusiast and the urge to follow him comes from the desire to share his enthusiasm.
