Murgon to host Council Olympic Games

Local Governments in Southern and Central Queensland will participate in the first Council Olympic Games on Saturday 13 October 2001, hosted by Murgon Shire Council.

Anticipated to become an annual event, the program will include volleyball, basketball, squash, indoor bowls, putt putt golf, bocce, ping pong, badminton, touch football and the mini Olympics. Each competing team will play a different sport against a different Council team.

Murgon Shire Council expects 20 Queensland Councils to participate in the Games, totalling close to 300 people. Councils may nominate more than one team of eight and can nominate individuals to join teams made up of extras from other Councils.

Due to sponsor donations, there is no entry fee.

Free accommodation is available on the Friday and Saturday nights at the Sport and Recreation Centre in Murgon. Spectators and family members are encouraged to attend. Bar and barbeque facilities will be operating throughout the day.

Council’s Sport and Recreation Centre Manager, Bob Dieckmann, said the Games will be a great event for Queensland’s Local Government employees.

“It’s a great opportunity for participants to mingle and mix with other Council staff, demonstrating support for their respective social clubs,” he said.“On the day, participants will become part of Australia’s sporting culture, a lifestyle highly recommended for future health and wellbeing.” If poor weather dampens the day, an alternative indoor program has been arranged.

Councils are encouraged to nominate teams early to ensure that the event is well organised and planned.
