Living Regions – Living Suburbs

Cardinia Shire Council was one of the first to receive a grant under the Victorian State Governments Living Regions Living Suburbs program. The town centre of Cockatoo, one of the areas most picturesque towns, is to be revitalised through grants totalling over $250,000.

In July this year, the Victorian Minister for State and Regional Development, John Brumby, announced a grant of $190,000 to Cardinia Shire Council in support of the project. He said this would give Cockatoo a much needed boost and provide renewed energy to the retail precinct.

“This project will result in a wide range of benefits for the local community,” he said.“It will help Cockatoo capitalise on its proximity to the Puffing Billy Railway and encourage visitors to stop for a picnic or a pleasant stroll.

“It will create a central community point in the township that can be used for activities such as art and craft markets, and improve the link between the retail precinct and recreational facilities through formed pathways and improved parking. Above all it will give the community a new sense of pride.”

It is proposed that a village common will be located on vacant land overlooking parklands. It will incorporate picnic tables, shelters, footpaths and lighting, with the theme extending up the town’s main street.

“The $35 million Living Regions Living Suburbs initiative provides opportunities for all Victorian Councils, public authorities and incorporated community organisations to seek funding for projects designed to revitalise local communities,” said the Minister said.

The balance of the funding will be provided by Cardinia Shire Council.
