Graduate course addresses key issues for new team leaders and
technology business people *

The Australian Graduate School of Engineering Innovation, in a joint venture with the University of Technology, Sydney, has developed a graduate certificate course which kick starts people who have been appointed to their first managerial role.

The course is divided into eight subjects compared to the normal four. Subjects are applied to real work situations, which ensures participants understand the management principles, and use them to develop a module, they will use on the job.

Examples such as a project plan, a project risk plan, a value management plan, a systems engineering requirements analysis, or a leadership plan, are all developed.

Integrating course material into real work has real benefits in that participants do not feel that ‘training’ takes time from them doing their real job. Participants go back to their work groups with a sense of proud achievement when they show their colleagues what they have produced.

Councils gain from the new skills developed and the new processes mastered.

There are two concentrations in the course of project management and innovation. Covering project management, leadership, finance and value management appeals to project managers in construction, defence, IT, events and change management.

Innovation, E-business creation and business improvement processes, appeal to people in a range of more general positions.

Mixed industry syndicate groups ensure participants acquire best practice concepts from each other and from other industries.
