Glenorchy keeps its employees fit

In a commitment to providing staff with opportunities to increase their fitness levels, Glenorchy City Council has established a number of programs to improve heart health.Initiated through its Property and Recreation Department, the Glenorchy City Council Employee Health Program is made up of five fitness component programs.

These include lunchtime fitness, bikes for employee activities, Glenorchy bike committee, employee golf competition and cardiovascular assessments. The lunchtime fitness program provides free subsidised entry for staff to swim at the pool during their lunch break.

“Through the physical activity generated by undertaking the fitness programs, it is anticipated that this will result in an improvement in cardiovascular health of employees,” said Glenorchy City Council’s Property and Recreation Coordinator, Rod Marshall. “All the programs have been managed within existing budgets. The purchase of bikes and associated equipment has been funded by the Glenorchy Bike Committee for the use of both employees and residents, and at major community events.”

The promotion of each component program of the Employee Health Program is the responsibility of the program manager within that area. They are also in charge of the provision of bookings and tickets to facilities.

“All programs have been in place for in excess of 12 months and utilisation has been high by staff,” said Rod Marshall.“No statistics are currently available but it is believed that participating staff have benefited from the program with reduce absence from work.”
