Global Learning Village for Hume

A concept to create new opportunities for disadvantaged local communities through access to information and technology, has been unleashed by the Hume City Council in Victoria. The $10.2 million project is the first of a series to be financed by the State Government, under Reinvesting in Communities, through its Community Support Fund.

Two learning centres will be built in Hume. Hailed as a ‘catalyst for economic and social renewal’, this is a result of a partnership between Hume City Council, the State Government and the corporate sector.

Visy Industries agreed to contribute a total of $375,000 towards the construction of the two learning centres. Hume City Council is contributing $5.5 million and the State Government $3.75 million. A further $625,000 is to be raised from the corporate sector.

The Global Learning Centre in Broadmeadows will include facilities such as a computer/Internet centre, a resource centre, training facilities for further education and employment, and cultural exhibition space. Construction is expected to commence in early 2002, with the centre ready for opening in early 2003.

The Visy Cares Learning Centre at Meadow Heights will include maternal and child health services, neighbourhood learning programs and community meeting facilities.
