Australia’s world famous Outback will be celebrated in 2002 in a year that will showcase its people, destinations, achievements and beauty.
The Federal Government is a strong supporter of the Year of the Outback, in recognition of the important role of regional Australia in our national life.The Outback is a region which contributes significantly to the Australian economy through mining, tourism and agriculture.
The Year also highlights the infinite potential of the region. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson reaffirmed the Governments commitment to working in partnership with local communities, to give them the skills and resources to help them make their own decisions. Minister Anderson was speaking at a major Year of the Outback event in Alice Springs recently.
The Year of the Outback will encompass more than 500 activities across the country with events organised by local councils, communities and individuals.Local Government is invited to develop their own initiatives to recognise this year.
