Fastest growing city in North Queensland

An economic development plan has been adopted by the Council as part of a strategy to maintain Thuringowa as the fastest growing community in North Queensland. The Thuringowa Economic Development Plan cost Thuringowa City Council $180,000 to produce and has been described as a blueprint for the city’s economic development over the next decade.

In launching the plan, Mayor Les Tyrell commended the Council’s Commercial and Economic Development Department for producing the most comprehensive economic analysis and strategy ever undertaken in Thuringowa.

Councillor Tyrell also acknowledged the assistance of the Federal Department of Employment Workplace Relations and Small Business. The Department contributed $30,000 towards the study through its Regional Assistance Program. Councillor Tyrell said research assistance had also been provided by Townsville Enterprise Ltd and the Government Statistician.

The plan also incorporates other important studies including the Tourism and Rural Industries Strategies that are now being incorporated into Council’s Corporate Plan. Strengths and weaknesses in the local economy have been identified and priorities are listed.

The Mayor said economic development required a strong partnership with other levels of government and the private sector and this document clearly shows that the Council is prepared to play a supportive role in helping to boost the economy and create jobs. He said Council had also produced an excellent investment guide as a supportive document.

“This will be of special interest to businesses and individuals looking for a high growth area for investment,” Councillor Tyrell said.
