Thuringowa City Council has launched plans for improvements along an 11 kilometre stretch of the Ross River that could set the pace for a wide range of development options over the next 20 years. Mayor Les Tyrell has described the project as one of the most exciting and innovative ever undertaken in Thuringowa.
“Very few communities in Australia would have such a beautiful stretch of unspoilt river environment so close to two large urban centres,” he said. “Our main aim is to open up the river habitat to greater access by residents and visitors while protecting its natural beauty”.
Councillor Tyrell said a brochure outlining the project and seeking public input had been delivered to all residents and the community consultation process had generated widespread involvement and support. The consultation process also resulted in the community being involved in selecting a name for the precinct – Riverway.
Discussions have also been held with a wide range of stakeholders, including various State and Federal Government Departments, traditional owners, Townsville City Council and NQ Water, sporting groups and business people. Council will also seek funding partnerships and venture opportunities with other levels of government and the private sector in bringing the concept together through staged developments.
