The Chief Executive Officer of Thuringowa City Council, Lyn Russell, has been named the 2001 Local Government Manager of the Year in Queensland.
Lyn was not aware she had been nominated by the Council for the prestigious award and admits to being taken by surprise when the announcement was made at the Local Government Managers Australia State Conference in Mount Isa.Her award was for Councils with 100 or more employees, which covers most of the major cities and towns throughout Queensland.
Lyn Russell joined the Council three years ago as the Chief Executive officer and was also named the Telstra Businesswoman of the Year for Australia in 1996.
In receiving the Local Government Managers Award, Lyn paid tribute to the teamwork that had been developed in Thuringowa between Councillors, Directors and staff. She said the main thrust for management change in the Council in recent years had been to improve customer service.
