Cost effectiveness in bridge building at Kilkivan

An upgrade of three timber bridges to a precast concrete modular bridge system has seen Queensland’s Kilkivan Shire Council reap exceptional rewards from its results.

Council was faced with having to upgrade 12 of its timber bridges, with three identified as needing full appraisal. Following an assessment of various options against Council criteria which required lowest whole of life cost, minimum long term maintenance and maximum use of Council’s own workforce, Council decided to use CSR Humes’ precast modular bridge system, Humedeck.

“The use of precast concrete bridge deck units resting on cast in situ concrete headstocks met these criteria,” said Council’s Director Engineering Services, Tony Robbins. “It was simple to install which made it possible to use Council’s own day labour force to complete all works with the exception of piling and precast deck manufacture. The durability of concrete and the 100 year design life is an important factor to consider on rural roads because it minimises ongoing maintenance costs.”
