Bayside ‘taste test’ a winner

Youth Services at Melbourne’s Bayside City Council has collaborated with local sport and recreational groups, enabling young Bayside residents to ‘taste test’ activities for free. The project aims to provide opportunities for recreation providers, schools, youth organisations and young people to try out local clubs and sporting groups before making that longer term commitment.

“This is a great opportunity for young people to get out and about and try a recreational activity that they are interested in,” said Mayor, Councillor Terry O’Brien.“The programs also give parents the chance to let their kids try a variety of activities before determining where their interests lie.”

The new ‘taste test’ initiative is part of the Youth Linkages Program which aims to provide opportunities to increase young people’s participation in existing cultural, recreational, creative and educational activities in Bayside.

“The program will promote and create opportunities that will enhance the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing among members of our community,” Councillor O’Brien said.

The main objective of the program is to deliver activities to young people in their own environments to enable them to take a first step in a new direction, whether it is sport, a hobby, community involvement or cultural activity.
