Play it Again! Active Australia Day 2002

Local Councils around Australia have started planning their involvement in another successful and fun community event for Active Australia Day 2002. This year the Day will be held on Sunday, 27 October. Local Governments have held hundreds of events over the past four years by linking facilities and clubs and encouraging people to become more engaged in a sporting, active lifestyle.

High profile ambassadors are being recruited in every state and territory to help promote the key message of incorporating more sport and physical activity into the lives of all Australians. Clubs are being encouraged to join with Council activities for Active Australia Day so that opportunities to maximise the number of people active in their local area are taken up.

Councils can assist by working with Active Australia to register for the Day and by keeping their local clubs and associations informed about the latest developments and tools to encourage people to ‘Play it Again!’, the catchcry of the 2002 campaign. Councils can register online to receive updates and get new ideas on how to get people active in their area. The list of ambassadors, key events, ‘what’s new’ and ideas for activities will all be on the website and are updated regularly. One of Active Australia Day’s key ambassadors, Rob de Castella MBE, believes strongly both in the importance of being active, as well as the vital linking role of Councils in assisting people to reach their physical activity goals.

“The success of Active Australia Day can be attributed to the support offered by Councils in the lead up to the Day and the fantastic events that they organise for the last Sunday in October,” he said. “Participating Councils, clubs and schools realise that Active Australia Day is an important tool through which they can develop and utilise links between Local Governments, clubs and schools for positive outcomes and be proactive within the community.”
