The voice of youth at a click of a button

Lake Macquarie residents aged 12 to 20 will be able to express their views and decide what happens in their area by joining the Council’s youth e-group. Council is creating a young people’s e-mail group, whose role will be to consult with other youth in Lake Macquarie on issues important to them and communicate the results to Council.

“Young people have strong opinions and views on what they would like to see available to them in terms of services and activities,” said Lake Macquarie City Council Project Officer, Andrew Bryant. “By developing the e-group, we are making it easy for them to express their opinions, and to have input into Council decisions.

“The e-group will provide a communication channel between youth and Council, and is the most efficient way to get direct feedback on key issues. We’ll be using the e-group to pass on information and to canvas the views and opinions of members on issues where Council can help.”

Members of the group are also expected to be involved with the planning of Youth Week and other youth events. The e-group works like e-mail, except that the messages sent by those in the e-group are sent to all members, and are posted to the e-group’s web page. The web page acts as an archive of all of the messages sent via the group.
