Clarence City and Glenorchy Councils in Tasmania have developed an innovative CD that is hoped will assist medical practitioners to understand the requirements of work activities, leading to better pre employment medical assessments and return to work programs.
Medical practitioners are regularly called upon to provide advice in relation to pre employment medicals, work related injuries and rehabilitation plans.
“There is an increased need for Councils to provide medical practitioners and rehabilitation providers with reliable, accessible and flexible information in relation to a wide range of work activities undertaken by employees,” said Clarence Mayor, Alderman Cathy Edwards. “The CD provides an easily transportable source of work/task information to create a general understanding of a range of tasks, or to identify specific issues related to a particular medical problem. It provides medical practitioners with the opportunity to discuss work activities directly with an employee and their rehabilitation provider, rather than having to visit a worksite.”
To date, the project has cost approximately $3,500.
“Parks and roads business areas have been the major focus of the project, however, other tasks, such as pipe laying, mains clearing, reticulation and waste management activities are expected to be included over the next six to 12 months,” Councillor Edwards said.
Benefits of the Task Analysis CD project have included a greater common understanding of tasks performed by staff, the risks associated with those tasks, and techniques that can lead to performing them more safely.
