New Mediterranean for north central Victoria

Located in the north central region of Victoria, a new venture titled ‘The New Mediterranean’ is set to transform the area, providing farmers and businesses with a myriad of opportunities.

The New Mediterranean includes the City of Bendigo and Loddon and Gannawarra Shires. It is being promoted as The New Mediterranean due to its fertile soils, its climate and its water, which are characteristics of some of Europe’s Mediterranean regions.

Traditionally centred on milk production, cereal, grains, pulses and livestock, the region has a diverse agricultural base and manufacturing base, plus natural appeal. It has been estimated that the annual agricultural output for the region is in excess of $500 million, making it one of the most significant agricultural production regions in Victoria.

There are a number of non traditional agricultural ventures currently being explored and established in the region, including olives, tomatoes, winegrapes, nectarines, apples and walnuts. Irrigation is available through an extensive water channel system provided through Goulburn Murray Water, which services the region.

Incentives are also being given to potential farmers via Loddon Murray 2000 which targets investments that lead to increased productivity, efficient use of water and opportunities for value adding. Along with this, the thriving City of Bendigo is at the heart of The New Mediterranean, a region experiencing a rapid increase in population and attracting a greater number of business opportunities.
