Bass Coast Shire Council has received the 2002 Liability Risk Management Excellence Award, sponsored by Civic Mutual Plus (CMP). CMP insures 77 of the 78 Victorian Councils for liability. The award was presented in October at the Municipal Association of Victoria’s (MAV) Annual Conference in Melbourne.
Council developed its risk management program in 2000. It involves working closely with volunteer committees of management to ensure that community facilities, such as halls and reserves, are safe for all users. The program teaches volunteers about good risk management practices and how to implement these in overseeing the facilities.
“Bass Coast Shire Council won the award for its innovative community based risk management program,” said Ron Farrell from CMP Insurance. “The program demonstrates a commitment to excellent risk management practices, supporting volunteers and community safety.”
Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council, Councillor John Gains, accepted the award.
Council developed a training program and manual that is now being used throughout Victoria by other Councils, community and industry groups. Councillor Gains said the program was developed in response to many public liability problems facing volunteer groups and community committees across Australia.
“We wanted to ensure that local groups could deal with these issues and that subsequently community facilities remained well maintained and safe for the broader community.”
