Tas conference to explore community safety issues

To be staged on 18 February 2003 at the Launceston Tramsheds, this national conference will explore cooperative and proactive approaches to community safety through a focus on the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).

The role of community development in addressing and strengthening crime prevention and safety strategies will also be explored.

The Launceston City Council, Northern Safer Communities Partnership and Tasmania Police are working together to host an exciting conference aimed at relevant Local and State Government officers, community development practitioners, educationalists and other relevant professionals. Representatives from relevant community groups and individual community members with an interest in the issues are also encouraged to attend.

The conference aims to achieve the following.

  • Fostering a culture of understanding regarding the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).
  • Fostering cooperative and coordinated approaches to crime prevention and community safety.
  • Exploring the role and the effectiveness of community development approaches to crime prevention and community safety.
  • Encouraging cooperative working relationships between stakeholders.
  • Moving towards the development of partnership agreements between Councils and the Tasmanian Police regarding the assessment of crime risk factors in the development application (DA) process.

An exciting line up of keynote speakers has been prepared including President of the Asia-Pacific Chapter of the International CPTED Association, Dr Wendy Sarkissian; Chief Inspector of the NSW Police Service, Phil McCamley; Lecturer in Regional Development Policy in the School of Government at the University of Tasmania, Dr Tony McCall; and Police Inspector with Tasmania Police, Stuart Scott.
