Albury’s youth committee

Infusion, the City of Albury’s Youth Action Committee, has received a 2003 Indent Partnership Grant valued at $6,000. This recognises their hard work and assists them in continuing to stage safe, drug and alcohol free youth events in Albury.Five of the Albury Youth Action Committee members were presented with the award for the Indent Committee of the Year in November last year at the Sydney Opera House.

Kristy Wilson, the NSW Indent Program Coordinator, said that organisers were impressed by the Albury committee’s level of professionalism, commitment and their ability to work together as a team. Members of Infusion range from 14 to 22 years old, and come from a cross section of backgrounds within the Albury community.

“There are 30 members in total, with a core group of about 20,” said Council’s Youth Development Officer, Bridget Guthrie. “To add to that, there is a waiting list of young people wanting to be part of the Committee.”

Meeting every Wednesday afternoon to plan and coordinate events and programs, the Committee aims to provide local young people with a voice in the community, and generate events and activities for young people.

It is expected that the grant money received by the Committee will go towards funding further events throughout this year. One such event is ‘Take over the Q’, a festival which is being held as part of National Youth Week. Activities for ‘Take Over the Q’ include street theatre, live music performances, art and craft stalls, market stalls and pavement art, just to name a few.

“All of this is run by the local youth involved,” said Bridget Guthrie.
