Review of Phase 2 commences *
Australian Local Government Training (ALGT) has commenced a new and significant project to enhance the Local Government Training Package, geared to delivering improved and nationally recognised training for Councils across Australia.
A major project completed in 2002 scoped the extent to which enhancements to the Local Government Training Package were required. The project to redevelop and enhance the Local Government Training Package is now well underway. Phase 2 of the project, currently being undertaken, will see the development of new units of competency, the review of some existing units, a new qualification structure and new packaging rules.
There are now a series of outlines of the new and redeveloped units of competency, showing titles and a brief description ready for comment. The expertise and advice of Council staff has been vital in developing the shape and content of the units, and ALGT would now welcome wide input regarding the work undertaken to date.
Just log on to the ALGT ‘Local Government Training Package Audit’ web site to view the titles and descriptors of the new and redeveloped units, and provide your comments directly to the development teams. Here you will find the Graduate Certificate Development, Packaging rules and Qualification titling, including eight new units encompassing the following.

- Strategic planning
- Operational improvement
- Risk management systems
- Using financial and economic information to support decision making
- Community leadership
- Business and community development.
There is also range of unit titles and descriptors in Governance, Development, Administration and Planning including the following.

- Environmental health, including new AQF IV units.
