Chairman of the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway Board, Rusty Priest AM, has acknowledged the support of Canada Bay Council, the NSW Government and a number of RSL sub-branches for sponsoring the installation of a Digital CCTV security system by Chubb Security on the Memorial Walkway. Primarily to protect the commemorative station displays along the walkway from vandals, this system provides a number of additional benefits.
The multimedia ‘bollards’ are located at a number of stations along the Walkway to capture images, both night and day, using special cameras and lighting. The images are then sent to the Security Control Room, located at the Concord Repatriation General Hospital, where operators check day and night for unusual events and occurrences. Operators can make announcements to either warn or guide people. In the case of criminal damage, investigation and apprehension is assisted through the digital recordings.
The multimedia system also allows visitors to listen to nostalgic or selected music or poems, played through the speakers built into these bollards, creating a pleasing and peaceful atmosphere. In the future, visitors to the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway may be able to play a dedicated presentation on the events, which occurred during 1942–43 at that particular station.
