The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA), working with State Local Government Associations, is developing a national approach to online service delivery.

ALGA received funding from the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts for the following two projects.

  • The State and Territory Association Technology Information Sharing (STATIS) project, which aims to improve online service delivery by cutting out the inefficient duplication of services.
  • The Local Government Standard Operability in Transactions (Interoperability) project, which will develop a framework for Local Governments to share information and networking services with State and Federal agencies.

A Local Government Interoperability Framework (LGIF) will be developed to provide a strategic, coordinated approach to these two projects. Projects to be included in the LGIF as nominated by State Local Government Associations include the following.

  • Shared Service Model for Council Back Office Systems
  • Council Services Thesaurus
  • DA Interface Project
  • Cross Jurisdictional Exchange of Land Information based on the Agora Frameworks
  • UML Compliant Process Modeling and Class Model Tool.

The LGIF will also identify online service delivery projects underway in each State or Territory that could be adopted by Local Government across Australia. The Federal Government has committed $45 million over five years from its ‘Networking the Nation’ program for these projects. Funding includes $6 million for each State and Territory (except the ACT) and $3 million for national projects.
