Wollondilly Shire Council is taking its information services to the community as a means of reducing isolation felt by residents. The Council has equipped a large truck and trailer with state of the art information and communication facilities, replacing the old mobile library service.
The mobile information service spends a day each fortnight in 11 different towns in the Shire, located south of Sydney. Previously, only residents with transport could access Council’s services at the Picton branch, between 8am and 4pm. The mobile service is equipped with wheelchair ramps, four computers, a printer, scanner, photocopier, 5,000 books and a two way satellite connection. The satellite technology, installed in a box trailer, gives staff and residents access to Council web sites, online library and the internet.
Wollondilly Shire covers more than 2,000 square kilometres, encompassing a variety of rural and farming areas. Most towns do not have public transport, so some residents experience a high degree of isolation.
