Northam transforms old

An old public housing estate will be transformed into a new development called Mitchell on Avon, forming a gateway to the township of Northam in Western Australia. Town of Northam Council’s urban renewal project will see 33 homes in the old Westrail Housing Estate repainted, landscaped and given new driveways, roads, kerbing and street trees.

Council purchased 13 properties that remained in the estate after tenants were given first opportunity to buy.

Mayor Ray Head said Council would use profits from the development to fund other township improvements.

“The benefits for the community of Northam are not only improving the entry into the town, but also surplus proceeds from the project will be of benefit to the whole community,” he said.

One project will be the $2.5 million upgrade of the town’s main street, to include wider footpaths, pedestrian crossings and improved intersections. Work is expected to be finished by the mid year.
