Victorian Local Government recipients of the Centenary Medal were acknowledged at a special function at Melbourne’s Windsor Hotel on 4 June. Local Government Minister, Candy Broad, congratulated more than 30 medal recipients, including Municipal Association of Victoria President, Brad Matheson, and CEO, Rob Spence.
About 50 Councillors, officers and guests attended the function, but many recipients were absent because the event clashed with Council budget meetings. Minister Broad said the medals acknowledged the unselfish work Councillors do for their communities.
Event organiser, Sheila O’Sullivan – herself a medal recipient – paid tribute to the long, often unpaid hours worked by all people in Local Government.
“Councillors spend an enormous number of hours out in their communities, often unheralded and without thanks,” she said. “While no Councillor expects recognition for the work they put in, it is gratifying when it is acknowledged.”
