Western Australia’s City of Geraldton has launched a campaign to mark the official countdown to the Indian Ocean Masters Games.Council will give $50,000 to the Games, which are expected to attract 3,500 visitors to the mid West Australian coastal city from 1–9 May 2004.

Competitors and spectators are expected to inject more than $2 million into the local economy with accommodation and purchasing refreshments.The Games are being marketed throughout Australia and New Zealand and to countries bordering the Indian Ocean rim.

Council’s Acting Chief Executive, Neil Wilson, said Geraldton would host at least 30 sports, including football, darts, cycling, badminton, athletics and angling.

“This is a huge event that will not only put the city in the spotlight, but help boost the local economy,” he said.

“It is quite a substantial amount that the City has allocated, but we are confident the event will be of great benefit to Geraldton businesses and the broader community.

Executive Officer for the Games, Anthony Chin, said financial support from Local, State and Federal bodies was vital to ensure their success. He said about 800 community members would support the event by volunteering time and sporting expertise.

“The Games will provide huge economic benefits for the City of Geraldton,” Neil Wilson said.
