Geraldton Regional Library will publish a book of historical photographs to complement an earlier volume called Geraldton: 150 Years 150 Lives, which was produced to celebrate the city’s 150th birthday. The first book documented the lives of people who contributed to the West Australian coastal city, while the new publication will feature places, streetscapes and buildings of interest.
Local Studies Clerk, Kelly Greenaway, said it was difficult to decide which photos to include becauses the library’s collection was so large. She said the library would ask residents to fill any gaps that emerged in its collection while compiling the new book.
A personal favourite of Kelly Greenaway’s is a photograph of a seaside sports day on The Esplanade jetty and foreshore on New Year’s Day 1920. The photo shows people promenading along the jetty towards a rotunda where bands played.
The project, which received a $10,000 grant from the Lotteries Commission, is being organised by an advisory group comprising library staff and volunteers who will write the history accompanying each photograph.
