Making Fremantle a special Council

The City of Fremantle is a special place and CEO Ray Glickman is determined to make Council a special organisation staffed by special people. Council has developed an Organisational and Cultural Statement as part of its Best Practice policy.

The statement encourages staff to conduct their work with passion, have fun and speak up for themselves.

“It’s about developing an organisational culture that encourages a work/life balance,” Ray Glickman said. “Part of that is being innovative and creative. We all take responsibility for what the organisation does. We strive to get better and better and we understand that people have got a life outside work.”

In recognition of that fact, Council has introduced Meeting Free Fridays, allowing staff to finish their week’s work without interruptions that lead to late nights at the office.

Council’s Telecommuting Project is also aimed at maximising staff time away from the office, by allowing some employees to work from home.

Ray Glickman said that the pilot program was reducing the stupidity of people driving back and forth to work each day. He said Council would eventually set up an office of the future when it vacates its “appalling sixties building”.

“The next office we have will not be framed around people coming in at nine and leaving at five,” he said. “A lot of our services will be delivered electronically and technologically. We don’t want to just move into another faceless corporate complex.”
