NSW Community Services Conference

Titled ‘What Money Can’t Buy – Community Development, Globalisation and the Market Economy’, the 2003 Local Government Community Services Association (LGCSA) NSW conference, will be held in Port Macquarie from Wednesday 12 to Friday 14 November 2003.

Confirmed speakers include Rev Tim Costello, Social Justice advocate and former Mayor of St Kilda; Tin Hta Nu, Burmese dissident and economist; Jack Beetson, Executive Director Tranby Aboriginal College in Sydney; Mark Vaile MP, Federal Trade Minister; Joe Barnewell, CEO Qld Chamber of Commerce; Dr Onko Kingma, former Federal Government advisor on regional development and sustainability; and Sheridan Dudley, General Manager Camden City Council.

The Conference is expected to attract up to 200 delegates and aims to explore the emerging issues around community development and service provision and their interface with the market economy and the effects of globalisation.

The two and a half day conference will include plenary sessions, featuring keynote addresses, a debate, concurrent sessions and round table discussions.

Objectives of the conference include:

  • Encouraging debate about the interface of community development and service provision with the market economy and the effects of globalisation;
  • Bringing together the private, and public sectors to discuss and develop key issues around positive partnership development;
  • Providing skills based workshops and best practice examples of this interface in action;
  • Highlighting some of the ethical dilemmas confronting the sector in this rapidly changing environment.
