Hindmarsh Shire Council in western Victoria has won a 2003 Heart Foundation Local Government Award for its mobile skate ramp project. Council won the Small Rural and Remote Community Project category and is now contending for a national award, to be announced in late November.
Council’s mobile skate ramp is a portable skating facility for skateboarders, roller bladers, BMX and scooter riders.
It was built by Skateramps Australia, a company based in Grantville, south east of Melbourne. The ramp is mounted on a trailer, allowing it to be placed on any bitumen or concrete surface, such as a car park or netball court. The mobile skate ramp incorporates all the safety and design features of a fixed skating facility.
Corangamite Shire, near Hindmarsh, was so impressed with the mobile skate ramp that it decided to buy one. Corangamite’s Culture and Community Facilities Manager, Trevor Greenberger, saw the Hindmarsh ramp being used in the town of Nhill.
“We decided to purchase a ramp after the recreation team did some research on other mobile skating facilities in Australia,” he said. “We’ll also be discussing the potential for communities to build complementary facilities.”
