Regional Victoria’s Northern Grampians Shire Council recently won a Victorian Local Government Risk Management Excellence Award for its sustained commitment, dedication and improvement to risk management principles and practices.
Corporate Services Director, Peter Elliott, said the award recognised the Council’s hard work to improve its risk management practices, which has seen its risk assessment rating improve from 36 in 1996 to its current level of 77 out of 100. This award recognised Council’s efforts in making continuous improvements in the management of risk right across the organisation, which in turn improved the management of risk in the community.
Peter Elliott said that since the inception of the assessment process, Council had worked very closely with the Civic Mutual Plus assessment team to identify areas that needed improvement. Council staff prioritised the areas identified and implemented recommendations from the assessment team, encouraging and promoting principles of risk management through the organisation’s service provision.
“Council as an organisation should be congratulated on its willingness to recognise the importance of risk management principles, and for being prepared to ensure that the required resources are made available,” Peter Elliott said. “Particular acknowledgment needs to be made of the efforts of staff in addressing the priorities as they are assessed, and ensuring that the appropriate processes become part of normal activities.”
