Pine Creek Community Council and the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT) launched the Pine Creek Community Digital Archive in March 2004. Using SearchTech’s Perfect Pictures image management software, the archive contains more than 1,500 historic images of Pine Creek’s pioneer and prospecting years. Similar image management solutions are used by libraries and tourism bodies.
The community archive is one of ten that have been established under LGANT’s Community Digital Archive Project funded by Northern Territory Library and Information Services.
Elaine Gano from Pine Creek Community Council has scanned and processed the images from existing prints to preserve this valuable historical resource for the community and future generations, along with visitors and tourists who are intrigued by the region’s history. As part of the Top End Triangle Tourist route – including Darwin and Kakadu – Pine Creek’s mining and pioneer heritage is attracting more and more visitors.
The 1,500 images in the archive represent about one-quarter of the total collection held in Pine Creek with more images to be added.
